Timothy Leary - "L.S.D"

“ Turn On, Tune In and Drop Out “

TImothy Leary was a major cultural figure during the late 60’s. A brilliant psychologist and Harvard professor turned L.S.D. psychedelic evangelist. For the mainstream media of the time, Leary served as an ambassador to the psychedelic counterculture and used those platforms to then deliver a truly radical message of “Turning On, Tuning In, and Dropping Out” and he truly meant it. “Tuning In” meaning looking inward, the exploration of consciousness as a means towards self-realization, transcendence and enlightenment. “Turning On” meaning, waking up through spiritual exercises and most especially, psychedelic drugs. By “Dropping Out” Leary promoted the idea of dropping out of society, of school, and forming smaller communities, or communes, to live of the land as he did at Milbrook and later with the Brotherhood Of Eternal Love.

This record was produced in 1966 and is a true document of the time. It is basically Dr.Leary talking for a half and hour. About consciousness, about awareness, Buddhism, psychology and much about psychedelics. A record like this back in the day would have been a means of spreading the message. It’s not musical although the doctor does seem to be recorded properly and there’s almost an ASMR-like quality to the recording. It’s most assuredly a document of the time. Most interesting today as means of understanding what exactly life was like and how word got around at the advent of the psychedelic era.
