Alan Watts was at the forefront of the California spiritual counterculture of the 1960s. An imminently wise English fellow, Watts was well versed in all manner of spiritual disciplines beginning with a youthful interest in the orient and Buddhism. He would go on to incorporate Taoism, Hinduism, among other isms, even briefly being ordained as Christian minister, before moving to California and eventually going to San Francisco, with a flower in his hair. Alan Watts was a purveyor of wisdom, and from that hippie capital of the world he published books, articles, travelled and lectured and had a quite popular syndicated radio program. He would go on to be a hugely influential figure, and remains so to this day.
This album though is not a recorded lecture. It is a “happening”, a sonic happening. It’s Watts with a group of folks in 1962 getting very far out. Years before the psychedelic music era of the mid to late 60’s, this freeform jam incorporated tribal percussion, chanting, piano, marimba, the occasional french horn, was most certainly a trippy record for those lucky enough to score a copy of what was at the time a limited private press release.
This modern repressing allows the listener to time-travel back and ride the current along with Alan Wats and friends.
